New Chapter turns the page into the next phase of my musical story with original music that combines jazz, latin music, and fusion into a trio setting with my electric and acoustic bass playing sitting front and center.

I’ve spent the better part of my life exploring my musical identity, but the chapters in my story have been shaped by different phases of life. I’ve immersed myself in music through schooling, lived life as an active performer, and dedicated endless hours to practicing my craft. At the same time, I’ve spent years changing direction to emphasize being a husband, father, and role model. Each chapter of my life brought something new to my musical identity - they’ve made me the person and musician that I am today. With a solid backdrop to my story, I’m excited to be opening a New Chapter on the story of my musical journey with this collection of music.

Each song represents my transition into this New Chapter in their own unique way. They each have their own part to play in the overall story.

Firm Resolution reflects the determination that I’ve got around establishing my musical identity today. The steady bossa nova groove, the lush melody, and the introspective improvisations all embody the work that I’ve put towards my recent musical journey.

Like many of my contemporaries, fusion was the Starting Point of my jazz explorations, so with this song, I’m returning to my roots. My six-string electric bass provides the groove and the melody, pushing the music towards a simmering burn that builds to a fiery intensity with solos from the whole trio.

When I first starting playing my Kala U-Bass, it was like a Sunrise on a new day; playing this wonderful instrument has inspired a lot of music for me - everything from my wacky car sessions to this song. The catchy melody swings through shifting time signatures creating open and exciting textures for improvisation.

New Chapter makes a bold statement that this part of my story is only the beginning. I play the winding melody on my six-string bass over a driving samba groove that provides the foundation for enthusiastic solos from the whole group. There’s a lot of musical excitement on this track that captures the feeling that I’ve got about my current musical explorations.

New Chapter is exactly what the title implies - I’m turning the page into a new era of my musical journey. For the first time in my life, I feel like all the pieces are in place to make the type of musical statement that I’ve heard in my head Through all my musical experiences and growth as a human being, I’ve got the musical tools in place, the mental space to make it happen, and the confidence in my vision.
